How Often Should You Visit a Chiropractor? | New Berlin Guide

“How many times do I need to come back?”

When patients first visit Advantage Chiropractic in New Berlin, they are usually in pain and looking for a quick timeline for relief. Because every patient’s spine, medical history, and daily lifestyle are unique, there is no single “one-size-fits-all” answer to how often you should get adjusted.

However, professional chiropractic care is rarely a one-time event. Just like going to the gym to build muscle or wearing braces to straighten teeth, retraining your spine and nervous system requires repetition and time.

To help you understand what to expect, we break our care plans down into three distinct clinical phases: Relief Care, Corrective Care, and Wellness Care.

Phase 1: Relief Care (The Initial Intensive Phase)

When you first step into our clinic, your primary goal is likely to get out of pain—and that is our first priority, too. During this phase, you are experiencing acute inflammation, muscle spasms, or severe nerve interference (like sciatica).

  • Typical Frequency: 2 to 3 visits per week.

  • The Goal: To reduce pain, calm acute inflammation, and restore basic mobility as quickly as possible.

  • Why so often? The muscles and ligaments surrounding your spine have likely adapted to a poor posture or misalignment (subluxation). Frequent visits prevent the spine from simply “snapping back” into its incorrect, painful position between adjustments.

Note: Because we use the gentle, instrument-assisted Torque Release Technique (TRT), these frequent initial visits are incredibly safe and comfortable, requiring no heavy twisting or cracking.

Phase 2: Corrective and Restorative Care

Once your initial pain has subsided, you will enter the Corrective Care phase. This is the most critical phase of treatment. Many people make the mistake of stopping care the moment they feel better, only to have their pain return a few weeks later because the underlying structural issue wasn’t fully stabilized.

  • Typical Frequency: 1 to 2 visits per week.

  • The Goal: To retrain the muscles, heal connective tissues, and stabilize the spine in its correct alignment.

  • What to Expect: We will begin focusing on long-term structural changes. You may also be given targeted at-home stretches or ergonomic advice to support your in-clinic adjustments.

Phase 3: Wellness and Maintenance Care

Once your spine has been fully rehabilitated and stabilized, you graduate to Wellness Care. Think of this phase like visiting the dentist for routine cleanings or taking your car in for regular oil changes.

  • Typical Frequency: 1 to 2 visits per month (or every 6-8 weeks, depending on the individual).

  • The Goal: To maintain your optimal alignment, prevent minor subluxations from turning into major pain episodes, and support your overall nervous system health.

  • The Benefit: Routine maintenance care keeps your immune system strong, manages physical stress from your daily life, and helps you maintain peak physical performance.

What Factors Change Your Visit Frequency?

Your specific timeline will be determined after a comprehensive 54-point neurological evaluation. Several variables can dictate how long your recovery will take, including:

  • The Severity of Your Condition: A recent, mild muscle strain will heal much faster than a chronic case of peripheral neuropathy or decades of untreated degenerative disc disease.

  • Your Age and Lifestyle: A younger athlete may respond to care faster than someone who spends 40 hours a week sitting at a desk with poor posture.

  • Your Commitment: Patients who keep their scheduled appointments and follow our at-home ergonomic advice consistently see faster, more permanent results.
